Joseph L. Badaracco Jr.s Defining Moments: When Managers Must Choose B
Overview of main goals of the book Joseph L. Badaracco, Jr.ââ¬â¢s book, ââ¬Å"Defining Momentsâ⬠, focuses on the ethical decision making process of ââ¬Å"right versus rightâ⬠from a management standing point. In reality, ethical decision making has two types of conflicts:â⬠right versus wrongâ⬠and ââ¬Å"right versus rightâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Right versus rightâ⬠decisions are considered as the ââ¬Å"greyâ⬠areas of ethical decision making. Badaracco saw the need to focus on it as ââ¬Å"right versus rightâ⬠decisions play a large role in ethical decision making for managers in real ââ¬âlife. To do so, he written ââ¬Å"Defining Momentsâ⬠as a way of showing the significance of ââ¬Å"right versus rightâ⬠decisions, their effect on decision making, and methods on resolve the dilemma posed by ââ¬Å"right versus rightâ⬠. Badaracco mention that ââ¬Å"right versus right problems typically involve choices between two or more courses of action, each of which is a comp licated bundle of ethical responsibilities, personal commitments, moral hazards, and practical pressures and constraintsâ⬠(Badaracco, 6). It is considered a distressful and difficult moment for managers as they have to juggle between their personal values and the expectations of others. It is also what Badaracco interprets as ââ¬Å"defining momentsâ⬠. Badaraccoââ¬â¢s book follows the accounts of Steve Lewis, Peter Adario, and Edouard Sakiz, three different managers, as they encountered their ââ¬Å"right versus rightâ⬠dilemmas. He uses those scenarios as examples to guide the process of resolving right versus right dilemmas. With the insights and knowledge gained from moral philosophers, Badaracco constructed a realistic framework focusing on the method of knowing oneââ¬â¢s own values and questioning how big of a role the values play in oneââ¬â¢s life as the fundamental ste... ...hem get bearings, stay their courses, and bind their daily work to larger ends and purposes"(Badaracco, 130). I believe that the concept has practical relevance personally and professionally. The imagined best life" concept basically incorporates the "value of looking up from the urgent tasks of the moment and placing them in the larger context of the life" (Badaracco, 129) with considering what is at stake. It allows us to look at the goal we set and think of the things that would lead us there. By doing so, we could understand the values and stakes that we needed to be achieved. It is significant for people as they sometimes get bogged down by what is occurring at the present and neglecting the impact it has in the future. Works Cited Badaracco, J. . Dow Chemicalââ¬â¢s Bid for PBB in Argentina Essay
1. (5 pts) Using the values from exhibits 9, 10 and 11, a terminal growth rate of 0%, and a discount rate of 20%, what is the value of each of the three investment stages? 2. (30 pts) Describe the two most relevant factors (only those related to the fact that the acquisition is in Argentina and not in the U.S.) that in your opinion add uncertainty to those cash flows. Please list each factor with a short explanation of why it is relevant, whether it is a diversifiable risk (assume Dowââ¬â¢s investors are global) and the likelihood that it will affect PBB. 3. (20 pts) For question 3 please state which statement you agree with and why. The numbers shown are there to provide an idea of sensitivity, they are not precise and there is no precise answer to these questions. That is, in the absence of much, much more information, there is no clear ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠answer (though there are many ââ¬Å"wrongâ⬠ones). Your reasoning is what matters most. Suppose that ââ¬Å"todayâ⬠is 1997 (thereââ¬â¢s nothing particularly special about 1997, I could have chosen any other year near 1995, the beginning of the valuation). a. The sensitivity of 1998 revenues, measured in US$, to 1997 changes in the Argentinian peso against the dollar is such that: a.i. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 40% fall in revenue, measured in US$, a.ii. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 20% fall in revenue, measured in US$ a.iii. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into no fall in revenue, measured in US$, a.iv. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 20% increase in revenue, measured in US$, a.v. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 40% increase in revenue, measured in US$. b. The sensitivity of 2010 revenues, measured in US$, to 1997 changes in the Argentinian peso against the dollar is such that: b.i. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 40% fall in revenue, measured in US$, b.ii. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 20% fall in revenue, measured in US$, b.iii. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into no fall in revenue, measured in US$, b.iv. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 20% increase in revenue, measured in US$, b.v. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 40% increase in revenue, measured in US$. c. The sensitivity of 1998 costs, measured in US$, to 1997 changes in the Argentinian peso against the dollar is such that: c.i. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 40% fall in costs, measured in US$, c.ii. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 20% fall in costs, measured in US$, c.iii. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into no fall in costs, measured in US$, c.iv. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 20% increase in costs, measured in US$, c.v. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 40% increase in costs, measured in US$. d. The sensitivity of 2010 costs, measured in US$, to 1997 changes in the Argentinian peso against the dollar is such that: d.i. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 40% fall in costs, measured in US$, d.ii. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 20% fall in costs, measured in US$, d.iii. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into no fall in costs, measured in US$, d.iv. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 20% increase in costs, measured in US$, d.v. a 40% devaluation of the Argentinian peso would translate into a 40% increase in costs, measured in US$. 4. (10 pts) Based on your answers to question 3, a. What would Dowââ¬â¢s short-run net exposure to the Argentinian peso be? b. What would Dowââ¬â¢s long-run net exposure to the Argentinian peso be? c. If Dow wanted to hedge its short-run net exposure to the Argentinian peso, what would it have to do? Please provide three different alternatives it could use to hedge that risk and explain which one is likely to be the cheapest. d. If Dow wanted to hedge its long-run net exposure to the Argentinian peso, what would it have to do? Please provide three different alternatives it could use to hedge that risk and explain which one is likely to be the cheapest. 5. (30 pts) In light of what youââ¬â¢ve answered in questions 2 through 4 and other material from class, please state whether the discount rate that Dow should use for this valuation is larger, smaller, or the same as in the U.S. 6. (5 pts) Based on your previous answers, should Oscar Vignart bid for PBB, and if so, how much? (Maximum 100 words.) 1. (Exhibit 1) The first stage has a value for the 51% of PBB of 160.833 million of dollars. The second stage has a value (100%) of 182.62 million of dollars. The third stage has a value of 92.66 million of dollars. The first problem that involves a risk factor for investors to Dow is political risk. The economic and monetary policy implemented by the Argentine government at this time, in recent years has allowed the country to recover from a decade of crisis and seems to work pretty well. However, the risk that these maneuvers are counterproductive in the long run is alive. In that case Dow suffer some problems. In fact, most of the production in the three stadiums and sold locally (PBB 100%, 89% Polisur, 31% of capacity due to the widening of stage 3) and, if there were problems due to the political instability, most of its current and potential customers (formed by small and medium-sized businesses that use POLYETHILENE to produce good consumer) could struggle and eventually fail. That would be a serious reduction in the margins of the Dow and in its cash flows. The second problem is related to foreign exchange risk. Regarding this risk factor should make some clarifications. For the moment the government is pursuing a policy of currency pegging, for which the exchange rate and artificially set at 1. However, this condition may no longer be sustainable. In this case if it were abandoned is easy to imagine the effect it would have on markets, putting in serious condition, the Argentine economy because of lack of confidence in its solvency and this would lead to a sharp appreciation of the dollar on the weight. This situation is not particularly influential on the budgets of 3 stages where Dow is going to invest because both revenues and the variable cost (about 90% of total costs) are in dollars and only a small amount of variable and fixed cost are in Peso, and anyway with devaluation of Argentinian currency would lead to an advantage per Dow (needed fewer dollars to pay in Peso, and those costs are slower to adapt to new exchange rates). On the contrary the negative effect of the abandonment of the peg you would in Argentine petrochemical market. In fact, polyethilene prices are in U.S. dollars and with the devaluation of the peso (the currency in which the players downstream of Dow are cashing) Dowââ¬â¢s Argentinian customers could find themselves in difficulty to support prices in dollars, which are international based. That would lead to a radical decline in the profitability of Dow. Finally, it is important to emphasize that, also selling outside the country, Dow would see margins decline due to higher costs of transportation and duties. 3. a. ii. PBB Is cashing in dollars so a fall of 40% of Peso would not have a direct impact of translating the cash flow of PBB into dollors. However PBB operates in Argentina, and its revenues are tied to the ability of its customers to buy in dollars. With such a devaluation of the Argentine pbb customers may find it difficult to pay but it is said that everyone is unable to do so because they could be covered in the market for coins. pbb also may move and take advantage of the amount of unmet demand in Latin America. However, this in a year is not feasible to perfection then a reduction in revenues of 20% is predictable. b. iii. The reasoning is similar to that outlined above. However, in this case one can imagine that pbb reacted to the change occurred 3 years before or however that the situation has changed. If the economy has recovered, itââ¬â¢ll be exporting outside of Argentina for the amount of capacity can not be sold in argentina, decreasing their margins because of the cost of export revenues, but keeping to the level in the case of PEG. c. ii. Talking about the good things are different costs. Even tough much of the costs are in U.S. dollars for pbb there is a part of them that is paid in pesos. It is part of the variable costs and fixed costs. However a devaluation of the peso would be a gain for PBB, which, cashing in dollars, will convert fewer dollars to pay in pesos. As mentioned, however, this effect would be taken with a not too substantial part of the costs of pbb, and also it can be assumed that during the year some of these costs are aligned in part to the conversion values ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹before the write-down for an inflationary process. d. iii. The reasoning is similar to that described above, however, it is assumed that in the course of 3 years, the monetary costs of PBB align to those pre devaluation, thus not allowing to benefit from the effect devaluing. a. the net peso short run exposure is about the fixed cost, other variable cost and taxes, for an amount of (EXHIBIT 1) of 116.7 million of dollars. b. the net long run peso exposure is 374.22 million of dollars. c. to hedge a currency risk the alternatives are: forwards (or future) contract options currency swap. The best alternatives in the short run are the forward, they are cheap (no entry expense) and very versatile. To hedge the amount the just have to enter in a contract of the opposite direction of what they need. In this case they have to buy the total cost in pesos ad the current exchange rate in dollars. Using options it would much costly because of the option premium which has to be paid once you entered in such a contract. Anyway, because you will only exercise your right if it the exchange rate is favorable, they leave gain opportunities in exchange rates. The currency swap doesnââ¬â¢t fit well the short run exposure because of the length of such a contract and and the cost to be inside that kind of contract if there is not an existent debt. d. In the long term forward could be costly for the premium that the controparty may put in the exchange rates (they are commonly banks in over the counter markets), and because for long term the market could be illiquid. In this particular case the long term are just 3 years so using forward could still be a good choise. Options in the long term are not good because it is difficult to find in markets contract with such long expiring date (and exact date in order not to incur in basis risk) and because you have to buy several contract. Swap could be an idea, but as forward donââ¬â¢t allow gains on favorable exchange rate; a currency swaption (option on a currency swap) could be an idea, but looks costly at time of entering in the contract. The discount rate that Dow should use, should be higher than that used for evaluating such an investment in the United States. This is due to the fact that the rate of between 8-10% used in US incorporates a risk premium relative to the U.S. market, which is different from that required for a similar investment in the Argentine market. In fact, looking at the performance of American and Argentine sovereign bonds, we see that the latter are higher than the U.S.. this difference is no more than the country risk premium that an investor requires to invest in Argentina compared to investing in the U.S.. this spread can be introduced into the calculation of the value of the correct discount rate using the following formula: Keu is identified with the unlevered cost of capital, or the return required to invest in certain asset class. With rf the risk-free return to us, ï ¢u with the unlevered beta for the sector (plastic and specialized chemicals) with rm the market return and cpr country risk premium. Now, in the specific case under investigation in research on international databese you identify that the unlevered beta of the sector is close to the unit. You can also add that in the long term all beta approaching market beta (as a consequence of the Efficient Market Theory that states that as all information becomes known, the market will settle to its proper level as everyone will be able to make correct choices), and therefore since our beta in databese is equal to one, the hypothesis of adjusted beta only reinforce this assumption. So in this particular case it can be assumed that the country risk premium can be simply added to the discount factor used for an American investment. The problem is now correctly assessing the market risk premium. You can see from the exhibits proposed (Exhibit 2) that in recent years, with the PEG CPR has fluctuated around an average of about 700 basis points. Despite the markets already incorporate the possible abandonment of the peg and its causes is not difficult to think that if that happened the ââ¬Å"cprâ⬠suffer a considerable leap and this estimate might be not prudent, but we must remember that the market is not only Argentina in the presented 3 stages, and potentially due to the increased demand in Latin America (exhibits 3), Dow could be exported elsewhere. A CPR of around 5-7% is so reasonable, for a total discount rate between 13-17%. By using the rate of growth proposed in the case of 3.3% per annum and a discount rate of 16%, the NPV of 51% of PBB is of U.S. $ 207,476 million. This amount is not however the correct the price of the bid. Just the cash flows are not enough to assess the correct price to offer the Argentine government. As first analysis the two competitors do not seem serious bidder in the auction because they do not meet the request of combined 5 billion net worth. There are still 10 days at the closing of the auction and if they succeed caming forward with a capital increase bringing their combined wealth over 5 billion, then Dow should also consider the fact that it can benefit not only the cash flows of PBB but also those of the 3 stage of the project, which provide in part an increase in production capacity of PBB and especially of its efficiency. A price around $ 300 million should keep out other potential bidder, which they cannot reach the advantage of being the mainly argenitian producer . However, this scenario is not credible given the close smebra operating times were competitors to meet the demands of the government, then the minimum bet request for $ 150 million should be sufficient and would allow Dow generate a significant positive NPV. 150 ultimately is ultimately the value to offer.

Effective Book Review Writing Tips
Effective Book Review Writing Tips There are fundamental differences among the various kinds of scientific books. What should be covered in an effective book review. Monographs. We can define a monograph as a specialized book written for a specialized audience. Therefore, the reviewer of a monograph has one paramount obligation: to describe for potential readers exactly what is in the book. What, precisely, is the subject of the book, and what are the outside limits of the material covered? If the monograph has a number of subjects, perhaps each with a different author, each subject should be treated individually. The good book review, of course, will mirror the quality of the book; the pedestrian material will be passed over quickly, and the significant contributions will be given weightier discussion. The quality of the writing, with rare exceptions, will not need comment. It is the information in the monograph that is important to its audience. Highly technical language and even some jargon are to be expected. Reference Books. The subject of a reference book is likely to be much broader than that of a monograph. Still, it is important for the reviewer to define in appropriate detail the content of the book. Unlike the monograph, which may contain many opinions and other subjective material, the reference book contains facts. Therefore, the prime responsibility of the book reviewer is to determine, however possible, the accuracy of the material in the reference book. Any professional librarian will tell you that an inaccurate reference book is worse than none at all. Textbooks. In reviewing a textbook, the reviewer has a different set of considerations. Unlike the language in a monograph, that in a textbook must be nontechnical and jargon must be avoided. The reader will be a student, not a peer of the scientist who wrote the book. Technical terms will be used, of course, but each should be carefully defined at first use. Unlike in the reference book, accuracy is not of crucial importance. An inaccurate number or word here and there is not crucial as long as the message gets through. The function of the book reviewer, then, is to determine whether the subject of the text is treated clearly, in a way that is likely to enable students to grasp and to appreciate the knowledge presented. The textbook reviewer has one additional responsibility. If other texts on the same subject exist, which is usually the case, the reviewer should provide appropriate comparisons. A new textbook might be good based on its own evident merits; however, if it is not as g ood as existing texts, it is useless. Trade Books. Again, the reviewer has different responsibilities. The reader of a trade book may be a general reader, not a scientist or a student of the sciences. Therefore, the language must be nontechnical. Furthermore, unlike any of the other scientific books, a trade book must be interesting. Trade books are bought as much for entertainment as they are for education. Facts may be important, but a boring effusion of facts would be out of place. Scientific precepts are sometimes difficult for the layperson to comprehend. The scientist writing for this market must always keep this point in mind, and the reviewer of a trade book must do so also. If a somewhat imprecise, nontechnical term must replace a precise, technical term, so be it. The reviewer may wince from time to time, but a book that succeeds in fairly presenting scientific concepts to the general public should not be faulted because of an occasional imprecision. Finally, with trade books (as with other scientific books, for that matter), the reviewer should try to define the audience. Can any literate person read and understand the book, or is some level of scientific competency necessary? If a reviewer has done the job well, a potential reader will know whether or not to read the book under consideration, and why. Imprint Information. At the top of a book review, the reviewer should list complete imprint information. The usual order is as follows: title of the book, edition (if other than the first), name of author(s) or editor(s), publisher, place (city in which the publisher is located), year of publication, number of pages, and list price of the book. Conventionally, well-known cities are not followed by state or country names. A publisher located in New York is listed New York not New York, NY and London is listed as London not London, U.K. A company providing support in all kinds of book review writing can be a good source of help when you need a book review. Try to find out the center of the book, the main idea around which the whole text is revolving. Find out the strong and weak aspects of the writer which he/she has shown in his/her writing. Highlight the strong and weak points in your review writing. Try to find out how the writer has justified his/her claims that he/she made in his/her written work. Introduce the text. Conclude in the last. Remember writing book reviews is a small exercise, you should not write a number of pages for it. Try to cut it short. Islam and Christianity â⬠One God
Islam and Christianity ââ¬â One God Free Online Research Papers I learned that in Islam that they are five pillars which stand out to me because I didnââ¬â¢t realize that by following these steps one is practicing one faith because of my beliefs for which I have been taught. For instance in Christianity prayer is one of the many rituals that they used everyday but in Islam in the second pillar (salat) prayer is held 5 times a day which in my opinion is more intense. I have learned that in Catholic Christianity I have been told to pray in the morning, before meals, and at bed, which I guess I could count five times a day but I wonââ¬â¢t have to go to the mosque like in Islam or no one would tell me like in Islam that they have a muezzin when to pray and I would go into the minaret. Going back to fact that the first pillar in Islam there is no god but god and Muhammad is the messager of God. The other three pillars that I have learned about are zarat which is the contribution to the welfare of the community. The shaum is fasting during Ramadan and the last is Hajj which is the pilgrimage to Mecca. In all the pillars I have learned that one can grow closer to Allah, and I learned through these pillars that people beliefs are not so different from others. I would have to say that the thing that surprised me was the whole praying situation. I found it different that one would go to a place to pray and one person calls one to prayer. In Islam they go to the Mosque which is the praying place and the Muezzin is the person that is in the Menarat calling others to pray. In Islam they have to pray 5 times which as stated earlier is dedication to oneââ¬â¢s faith. It did surprised me as well that in Islam there are very religious and very protective of their faith and to me that says a lot about a person, not necessary agreeing with them but know that they are believing in something that they think is right and in Christianity is doing what they believe is right. In the end no one wins because you canââ¬â¢t come back from the afterlife and tell everyone what the right way is. I would have to say some of the five pillars would be to extreme for me and I would feel guilty of not doing. For instance the fasting during Ramadan I wouldnââ¬â¢t agree for the sole reason I donââ¬â¢t really see the purpose of fasting the entire day, I mean as a Catholic we have lent and we fast for certain holy days but we are not that intense. I really donââ¬â¢t have a problem with that it just the fact that it would be unpleasant for me to follow those rules. Another thing will be the final pillar the pilgrimage to Mecca; I donââ¬â¢t think that you have to travel somewhere just because you feel that Allah is going to be there. I would say to Islam that Allah is everywhere; it doesnââ¬â¢t matter if you go or if you donââ¬â¢t. That would be unpleasant to me because I would feel that I would have to save all the money just to go because if I donââ¬â¢t then I would feel guilty and I know that you donââ¬â¢t have to go if you canââ¬â¢t afford if I was Islami c I would find this pillar hard to achieve. I would say the way that Islam Is similar to Christianity would be they believe in one God. Muslims have a messenger called Muhammad and Christianity has a messenger named Moses in my eyes. Here is the reason because in Islam Muhammad got everything that he needed to tell the people of Islam and Moses did the same for the Christianity. The example would the be in Islam the Five Pillars and in Christianity I would say the Ten Commandments. The final thing that Islam and Christianity would have in common is they both believe in sins and that they donââ¬â¢t put anything at or above their gods. I would say that there is lot of dissimilarities in Islam to Christianity. In Islam they believe in submission to Allah, in Christianity they believe in the trinity which is the father son and Holy Spirit is one. The sins of ingratitude in Islam is to me stricter than in Christianity because of the fact that in Christianity you can seek forgiveness rather than Islam which a sin of ingratitude where you have to be grateful of everything. Even if something bad happens you have to be grateful of whatever happens to you. Of course the obvious reason that Islam is different because they donââ¬â¢t have the sacraments that Christianity has especially in Catholicism which has seven sacraments. Another way that I would say that would be right is that Islam thinks of Jesus Christ as a prophet which in Christianity they think of him more of a prophet. In there eyes he was more a miracle worker than a savior as Christians would say. I donââ¬â¢t think that Muslims are little bit extreme than most Catholics, again a great example would be The Hajj the pilgrimage to Mecca. I really donââ¬â¢t see any Christians meeting at the same time in at some holy land as the Muslims do or maybe they do but its not intense as they Islam. I would say by studying Islam it has taught me that in that religion prayer is important as it is to me, but I donââ¬â¢t pray as much as Muslimââ¬â¢s which made me wonder if I should practice what I believe instead of just simply saying what I believe in. It has help me by reaching what I do believe in and making sure I have the facts down. In the end I would say that is help me reaffirm my faith and beliefs and has educated me in a way that I was wondering what others believe in. It has taught me be open minded as well just because I think any one studying Major world religions should be open minded and just because they donââ¬â¢t agree with other religions they should have another idea. As far as converting I donââ¬â¢t think that I will covert to Islam or become a Muslim just because I donââ¬â¢t believe in Allah and although I respect their thoughts I just donââ¬â¢t see myself in that religion and I happy and proud to be a Christian especially a Catholic. I have learned as Catholic a little bit more about how the church was formed and the causes of breaking Christianity in many parts. In the end I was just well education and have a better understanding on how Islam works as a whole. This argument is often called a thesis statement and it should be clearly stated in the essay`s introduction. Providing the Evidence When the argument is stated, a college student has to prove it by providing credible evidence. This evidence is usually taken from the relevant sources, which contain the unbiased experts` opinions. If you, for instance, are analyzing some poem, a meaningful line from it can serve as the evidence. Gentrification in Park Slope Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Gentrification in Park Slope - Research Paper Example Gentrification occurs when the middle class people move into the lower income resident of the neighborhood leading to displacement and changes basic character and flavor of the neighborhood (Angotti 4). The paper will focus on the causes, effects and control measures for gentrification. Its notable that gentrification comes with both economic benefits and adverse effects as some households face displacements. The gentrification of Park Slope is particularly far from new incident and has been in progress for decades. Gentrification in Park Slope is characterized by displacement free zone, which is an attempt to have the existing residents kept in their places. Gentrification in Park Slope summarizes all the market polarization, failures, and injustice that shaped life in Park Slope communities. Based on statistical analysis of housing surveys, gentrification in Park Slope was never a boost for anyone. Gentrification challenged the conventional experience through illustrating renters w ho are disadvantaged living in gentrifying neighborhoods have lower mobility rates compared to the renters in the non-gentrifying regions. Conditions that were brought by gentrification in Park Slope provided incentives for the poor renters so as to remain in their homes in the face of higher burdens and other rent stresses (Harvey, 8). Gentrification in the Park Slope has led to economic and social changes that are widely visible. In this case, it cannot be referred to urban generation because it leads to displacements of the neighborhood specifically on a large scale while the latter is the movement of high income households on a small scale of vacant buildings and land. According to Slater (12), gentrification occurs in places that have experienced low manufacturing employment, increase in service and entrance of women in the job market where the middle-income earners with the preference of an urban living move to low-income residentsââ¬â¢ neighborhood. The case of John Jay Co llege illustrated the effect of gentrification in schools. The focus was specifically on areas such as: student body composition, disciplinary climate, organizational climate, and academic organization. These areas have seen a long term effect of gentrification especially in John Jay College where gentrifies with children kept their children out of John Jay College, figuring out a way to place their children in schools outside the catchment area, or instead opting for private schools. This resulted into impacts on potential fragmentation and social integration of the social fabric in the neighborhood. The Gentrification process in Park Slope is also likely to affect the urban residents living near the central business districts with affordable well architecture residential houses since they are not economically and politically muscled as the gentrifiers. The entrance of the gentrifiers into these neighborhoods leads to rising of house prices as the middle-income households come with a huge appetite for spending, forcing the existing businesses in the neighborhood to improve their services. This leads to low-income household to move out to places they can afford since they had settled there because of cheap rent and proximity to the employment opportunities. These households had settled there due to convenience in that the same class of people also found it favorable to their circumstances (Smith, 1). Lower-income households that live in these

SOCIOLOGY-- Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
SOCIOLOGY-- - Essay Example In my view the governments are not doing enough to make these people lead a good life and more should be done in accordance to the living standards of this world. This essay would further provide my views on the responsibility of the government and if it should help the people who are earning at a regular basis. As poverty is prevalent in this world, many people tend to work even at places where they are not getting a handsome amount of income. This results in the loss for these individuals as the earnings they are get are used up by them only for survival. Thus nothing more is left for these individuals to live on in accordance to the standards. The government should share a responsibility with both the non-earning and the earning members of the community. The earning members should be provided with basic sum of money which would help them to come to standards with other members of the community. The government should provide the non-working class of the community with more grants, however the working class should also be considered when paying out grants. In educational institutions the non-working class is offered financial assistance however the working class is not, the government should make the institutions change their policy as at times even the working class is need of such assist ance. Grant which is a sum of money granted to people who are needy should also be granted to the working class so they can easily survive in this world. The working class of this society may not be earning enough to live according to the standards thus they should be helped equally by the government. However in doing so the government should also take notice of the total earnings that a house gets in a month. Such action would allow the government to analyze as to if a family is in need of grants or not. Furthermore the government should allocate some budget to the need of the working families too i.e. they should be provided with low fares or low priced
